Local patient with 2 total hip replacements finishes 104mi bike ride
June 19, 2014
Severe arthritis in both hips left 65-year-old avid hiker and biker Barbara Slott with limited mobility, forcing her to stop riding.
“The high activity level I’ve sustained over the years had resulted in a lot of wear and tear on my hip joints,” Slott says. “It got to the point where I was in near-constant pain. I couldn’t walk, and I certainly couldn’t bike or play with my grandchildren like I wanted to.”
Thankfully, following two successful anterior hip replacements with Dr. A. Kirk Reichard, hip surgeon at Northwest Orthopaedic Specialists, Slott has returned to the saddle, recently completing the 104-mile Reach the Beach bike ride from Beaverton, OR, to Pacific City, OR.
“The recovery was incredibly easy,” Slott says. “I just walked a bit further each day, and now I can do anything I want to do.”
Slott says she’ll participate in Reach the Beach again in 2015 as well as Le Tour de Koocanusa, an 83-mile lake ride in Montana, this August.
The anterior hip replacement technique Dr. Reichard used for Slott is a minimally invasive alternative approach to traditional total hip replacement.
“Using this technique, I’m able to access a patient’s hip joint without disrupting his or her surrounding muscles and soft tissues,” Dr. Reichard says. “This provides patients with quicker recoveries, shorter hospital stays and less pain than a traditional total hip replacement.”
