Ankle Pain

Ankle pain is most commonly associated with trauma and sports-related injuries, such as a fracture, or an injury to the ligaments of the ankle, such as a sprain. However, agitation and discomfort may also occur due to overuse injuries, which can range from mild joint pain to Achilles tendonitis (medically referred to as tendinitis). If you think you may be suffering from an ankle injury or condition and are experiencing any of the symptoms listed below, it may be time to visit a foot and ankle specialist.

  • Sudden intense pain
  • Pain when you’re NOT bearing weight
  • Pain that persists for more than two weeks
  • Swelling that persists or worsens after 2-3 days
  • Limited range of motion due to stiffness, weakness, or swelling

You should also seek treatment with an ankle specialist if you begin to feel feverish or if the area reddens, becomes warmer, and feels even more sensitive, as these are signs of an infection.

Preparing for My Appointment & New Patient Forms

Dr. Padrta did a great job getting the bone chip out of my ankle. I'd already had surgery for this problem elsewhere, but the other physician, for some reason, did a different procedure and left the chip in my ankle! After seeing no improvement after the first surgery, I went to Dr. Padrta to see if anything further could be done. He carefully examined my ankle, performed X-rays in his office and immediately discovered the bone chip was still there. We scheduled the repeat surgery, and he removed a bone chip from my ankle the size of a man's thumbnail! My recovery was a little slow at first, but I am in my 60s. I started skiing again this winter and am walking normally again for the first time in four years. Thank you, Dr. Padrta!!!!” — Teresa L.

“I came into office with a broken ankle. I was impressed with how soon I got an eval appt and then follow up surgery. Everyone I have dealt with has been so kind. The scar being left by incision is amazingly unobtrusive. The follow-up care has been very helpful. Thank you. I have one more spot in three weeks.” — Karen B.

“I met Dr. Mark Olson after breaking my ankle the end of December. It has been a long process. It first started out waiting 2 weeks for the swelling to go down before he could perform my surgery and begin the actual healing. Dr. Mark has been cautious and not allowing me to take any shortcuts in my healing process. He wanted to make sure it healed the very best it could and did not want to jeopardize the outcome. He and all his staff have been so wonderful to work with and be treated by. One month to the day after having my cast removed, I was walking without the use of any aide. I am starting to get back into my activities and look forward to hiking and backpacking this summer, although it may be a little slower than before but at least I can be outside and active. I'm not done with the healing and rehab process but thankful for the progress I have made so far.” — Colleen C.
