Treating a Complex Wrist Fracture
Previously, complex wrist fractures, also known as complex distal radius fractures, were treated with protruding pins. Fortunately, new technology has emerged which allows for internal fixation. Plates and screws allow the screw to thread directly into the plate, essentially locking the screw to the plate which prevents loosening, even in the softest bone. These plates avoid the need for pins that protrude from the patient’s skin. Because they are applied on the palm side of the wrist, the extensor tendons are not disturbed, and can usually be left in place after the fracture has healed. The fixation provides enough stability that most patients do not require a cast.
The surgeons at Northwest Orthopaedic Specialists have the appropriate training to use this complex application. Fractures that used to cause anxiety and consternation can now be approached with confidence.

"Another great experience at NW Ortho Specialists. From checking in with Michelle, to scheduling my next post op, my exam was pleasant and professional. Dr. Sestero and his staff gave me their full attention. He answered all my questions concerning my fractured wrist and what to expect in the future. I have never felt rushed or like a "number" in this office." — Coni W.
