Hip Bursitis

Bursitis of the Hip (Trochanteric Bursitis)

What is Bursitis of the Hip?

Hip Bursitis (Trochanteric Bursitis) symptoms include pain in the hip and at the top of the outer thigh. The pain is usually intense and sharp in the condition's initial stages. It may develop into a dull ache. It may be time to see the hip doctors at The Orthopaedic Surgery Center if you are suffering from one or more of the following:

  • Severe pain at night
  • Pain while laying down on the hip
  • Pain standing up after being in a seated position for a length of time

If you participate in a sport like distance running or volleyball, you may be at risk of developing hip bursitis.

Treatment

Physical therapy and pain medications can alleviate the symptoms of hip bursitis, but these methods usually do little to treat the root of the condition. Therefore, additional treatments such as anti-inflammatory injections, antibiotics, and even surgery, may be necessary.

“I suffered a very painful torn cartilage in my left hip. This went on for several months until I was referred to Dr. Lynch. When I met him and he saw my MRI and he explained exactly how he was going to do the surgery. I have the utmost confidence in Dr. Lynch to get the job done properly. Since I was going to have to wait until August 14th for the surgery, he prescribed an anti inflammatory medication with a mild non-narcotic painkiller which worked very well. I am looking forward to my upcoming surgery. I know that Dr. Lynch will do an outstanding job. I look forward to seeing him again.” — David R.

“I have had horrible hip pain for about three years. Before surgery, I was hardly able to walk because my pain was so intense. I had a back surgery with no results to the pain in my hip. It was always blamed for my hip pain. I went to Dr. Reichard who I think is the most marvelous orthopedic surgeon I have ever met ( and I have met many in my career in hospital ministry as a chaplain). He used every precaution to prevent infection and was so personable and caring. His staff also is marvelous and caring. I am still in a recovery mode so I cannot give you a testimony that I am back playing golf or riding a bicycle, but I am much better and know that in the near future, I will be doing more activities and be back to my old self. I am so thankful for Dr. Relichard and will be forever grateful for his expertise in caring for me. Thank you and many blessings to all of you.” — Janice E.

“I developed bursitis a few years ago after a fall. I chose to treat it via injections, pain medication, and physical therapy as I was caring for my husband who was terminally ill. I dealt with the pain as best as I could until I reached the point where I was in constant pain day and night. My husband passed away in February. Knowing that he would want me to care for myself, I met with Dr. Patrick Lynch. What struck me about Dr. Lynch was his ability to pinpoint exactly what the problem was and give me a plan that included bursectomies done arthroscopically on both hips on the same day. A few weeks later, I was having surgery, and all the staff was professional. The procedure was quick—I was in at 8:30 and on my way home at noon. I was prepared for a painful recovery, and to my complete shock, felt no pain at all. Thinking it may take a few days, I waited but the pain never came. No pain after a surgery is nothing short of a blessing. I continue with recovery and look forward to a pain-free life. Thank you, Dr. Lynch.” — Alice R.
