How Does a Hip Dislocate?
A hip dislocation occurs when the ball at the head of the femur slips out of its place within the socket of the pelvic bone, called the acetabulum, causing pain and immobility. Motor vehicle accidents are the most common cause of hip dislocation but it can also occur in children from a congenital joint condition.
Most dislocated hips are strikingly visible with the hip out of place. Swelling, pain, and difficulty moving the leg may also occur.
