Total Hip Replacement
What is Total Hip Replacement Surgery?
Total hip replacement surgery is used to replace a painful hip joint with an artificial hip prosthesis made of metal and plastic. The artificial hip replacement recreates the normal function of the natural hip joint.
After the surgery, hip replacement patients have far less discomfort in the hip joint, better range of motion, and better function once fully healed. Like any joint replacement procedure, total hip replacement surgery requires ample time for recovery as well as appropriate physical therapy in order to achieve the best results.

“I received a right total hip replacement in August of this year. My entire experience with Dr. Christopher Anderson and his staff was excellent. Dr. Anderson has a wonderful bedside manner and he took the time to explain my surgery in detail, as well as the risks involved. During my appointments, he was always willing to spend as much time with me as necessary, to answer all my questions; I never felt rushed. He also told me to call his office anytime with any questions or concerns that I had. When I did call the office, Chris, the office manager, was always cheerful and returned my calls promptly. The nursing staff, as well as the radiology staff, was always very pleasant, accommodating to my needs. I would highly recommend Northwest Orthopaedic Specialists and Dr. Anderson to my family and friends.” — Sharon B.
“Where to begin: About 2009 I felt there was no hope of ever enjoying the great outdoors again due to the pain in my hips, especially the left hip. The pain had gradually gotten worse over the past few years mostly in the winter months and then would go away the rest of the year. I was to the point of not walking but limping at work and everywhere and knew it was time to consult with a doctor. I went through physical therapy and to a chiropractor but it just wasn't enough, and then it was the thought of hip replacement scarred me. A coworker at my place of work had a good friend that worked for a company who supplied prosthesis to the surgeons around Spokane so she asked him if he were replacing a hip what part would he use and what doctor. He suggested a doctor and the part, which referred me to Northwest Orthopaedic Specialists. After my first appointment with Dr. Ellingsen I knew he was the doctor that I felt comfortable with and could trust to do the hip replacement. Dr. Ellingsen is very straight forward and explains everything at your level, in fact in the hospital after the first hip replacement my roommate told me that she learned more about the hip surgery listening to my doctor than her own doctor. Five months after my left hip replacement I had my right hip replaced. This has all been caused by osteoarthritis and I am sure down the line I will need the knees replaced, but I am working with Dr Ellingsen to avoid this for a while yet. I know he will be the doctor. He continues to help guide me with other issues also. Dr. Ellingsen is a great doctor and much appreciated!” — Karen W.
“Dr. Keeve has replaced both my hips—one in 2002 and one 2012. I would call them very successful, as I am able do anything I want to and some things I don't! The recovery time for newer procedure in 2012 was astounding as I was back walking the golf course in six weeks. This was after six sessions with a physical therapist I would highly recommend as she pushed just hard enough to make me work at it. My wife has had three back surgeries with Dr. Shuster, and she is also very pleased with her experiences. She also had two shoulder surgeries with Dr. Kersten, which she is very pleased with the results. As two people blessed with fragile bodies and arthritis, we are very pleased with Northwest Orthopaedic Specialists for helping us live our lives and participate in some things we may have had to forego without these men. Our thanks goes out to these doctors and to the people at Northwest Orthopaedic Specialists.” — Gary & Deb V.
