What is Cervical Decompression Surgery?
Cervical decompression surgery is used to alleviate neck pain caused by a herniated spinal disc or degenerative disc disease. This procedure involves fusing neck vertebrae together after the damaged disc is removed. For this reason, this surgery is sometimes referred to as anterior cervical decompression and fusion, or ACDF.
During neck decompression surgery, affected spinal discs in your neck are removed and replaced with bone grafts from elsewhere in your body, such as your hip bone or from a donor. As the spine begins to heal after the surgery, the adjacent vertebrae will naturally fuse with the bone graft, providing the neck with the support that it needs. Cervical decompression can help alleviate significant neck pain after an injury as well as pain from severe disc degeneration.
Minimally invasive spinal decompressions have the following benefits:
- Smaller scars
- Fewer complications
- Less muscle intrusion
- Faster recovery time
