Herniated Lumbar Discs

What are Herniated Lumbar Discs?

The discs located in the lumbar region of our spines play an important role in our bodies by absorbing shock, carrying the weight of our bodies, and enabling movements such as waist rotation. Over time, our discs can break down, placing pressure on surrounding nerves, resulting in a condition known as a herniated lumbar disc.

Symptoms of a herniated lumbar disc include pain, numbness, or weakness in the legs or feet, pain in the lower back or buttocks, and in very rare cases, loss of bowel or bladder control. If you are suffering from symptoms like these, it is important that you consult with a spine doctor. While you may alleviate some of your symptoms with nonsurgical methods, such as physical therapy, steroid injections, oral medications, or heat and ice applications, eliminating your symptoms may require surgery.
