Kyphoplasty for Spinal Fractures

Kyphoplasty (Balloon Vertebroplasty)

Kyphoplasty Treatment for Spinal Fractures

Kyphoplasty is used to quickly relieve pain associated with a spinal fracture while also correcting the fracture. It is performed by creating a small incision in the back, closest to the area of fracture. A narrow tube is used to create a path into the fracture to inset a special balloon. The balloon is gently inflated to elevate the fracture and return lost vertebral height. To maintain the repaired vertebral height permanently, the surgeon fills the cavity with a cement-like material which hardens quickly and stabilizes the bone.

Many patients experience immediate relief and others report pain reduction within two days. Patients are encouraged to return to their daily activities while avoiding any strenuous activity or heavy lifting, for ten days. After that, patients can typically go back to their normal activities without restrictions.
